History and Facts

School Namesake

Louise Cabaniss (1907-1994) was born to John and Callie Lee Wynn on May 26, 1907 in Maypearl, Texas. She attended Itasca schools, Thorpe Springs Junior College, and graduated from Texas Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Louise married Henry Russell Cabaniss.

Mrs. Cabaniss began her nearly 40 year teaching career at the Progress School in Ellis County followed by teaching opportunities in Johnson County. Louise finished her teaching career at Erma Nash Elementary School where she taught for 20 years. While at Erma Nash, she completed her Master’s Degree at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. She retired in 1976 from the Mansfield Independent School District.

“All my memories of her in the sixth grade were wonderful, lasting learning experiences,” recalls former student, Johnny Bratton. “She was stern and always challenging. Her classes were interesting and satisfying as well as educational.”

Mrs. Louise Cabaniss died on June 16, 1994 in Arlington, Texas.
